Of course, being a distributor for Lumber Loc hidden deck fasteners, I’m naturally posting information about this amazing invisible fastening system as my first blog post.
Lumber Loc is a biscuit style hidden fastener, which is the preferred style for many contractors because it is installed from the top of the deck, and uses only one screw per fastener, cutting down on labor costs to install. Lumber Loc, however has uniquely gone one step further in making it contractor friendly by eliminating any pre-drilling, because the screw goes in at a ninety degree angle through the fastener and into the joist, rather than a 45 degree angle through the deck board. When researching hidden deck fasteners, I talked with Steve Harris, the CEO of KK Manufacturing and inventor of Lumber Loc, who stated the reason behind the ninety degree angle is to work with physics rather than against it. Because all materials accept moisture, when natural temperature fluctuation occurs, these moisture molecules will expand and contract causing your deck boards to swell and shrink, which creates movement. Rather than try to hold the board rigid against physics, Steve designed the fastener to “float” in a slot and added his patented expansion wings which between these two concepts allow a deck board to move both lengthwise and widthwise. Just like your doors will sometimes stick in the summer because they have swollen from the humidity, your deck boards will move too. Lumber Loc allows your deck boards to move by not trying to hold it still with screws. He’s a genius!
